As a guest composer of the Brisbane (Australia) Conservatory and the Brisbane Philharmonic, Ewazen was captivated by the churning waves and the sheer grandeur of the Gold Coast landscape, writing bold music filled with lifting and cascading arpeggios for the pair of horns. Gold Coast Harmony is dedicated to hornists Lisa Bontrager and Michelle Stebleton, and pianist Tomoko Kanamaru, who premiered the work at the 2005 convention of the International Horn Society. The work is recorded by these artists on the CD Mirror Image at the Opera - Duets and Songs, available on MSR Classics.
GOLD COAST HARMONY is gratefully dedicated to my wonderfulfriends, hornists Lisa Bontrager and Michelle Stebleton (a marvelous horn duo who have performed exensively around the United States) and pianist Tomoko Kanamaru. They premiered the work at the convention of the International Horn Society, and subsequently recorded it on the CD “Mirror Images at the Opera – Duets and Songs,” available on MSR Classics.I wrote this one-movement work as a guest composer of the Brisbane Conservatory and the Brisbane Philharmonic in Australia. Brisbane is located on the northeast coast of the country, and dramatically set on the beautiful Gold Coast with its roaring surf. The piece was inspired by the churning waves and the sheer grandeur of this coastal landscape, with music that is bold, grand, and filled with lifting and cascading arpeggios.
