Niel Gow’s Lament (For the Death of His Second Wife) is a beautiful piece of fiddle music that is a staple of the Scottish fiddle repertoire. Its modal style and scope for ornamentation make it ideal for arrangement for two guitars. The piece is suitable for intermediate/advanced players.

Niel Gow was born in Perthshire in 1727 and is the composer of many fine fiddle tunes. His name is sometimes spelt as ‘Neil’ or even ‘Neal’. His first wife was Margaret Wiseman and following her death, Gow married Margaret Urquhart in 1768. This lament was composed on her death in 1805.

The piece can be simplified by omitting the ornamentation or made more substantial by performing a complete repeat which works very well musically.
