Composer Peter Schindler on this separate edition from “Perpetuum mobile”:

It is a well-known fact that the winner takes it all and the loser is left with nothing. And so those who have lost everything are socially worthless too, worthy only of rejection, as in this song on text no. 187 from the Codex Buranus. Those losers should just disappear from the prince's court. Only the wealthy will be acclaimed by the courtiers. If you have nothing of pecuniary value to offer, you will never win the favor of your fellow human beings. And another thing that remains true to this day: the sound of jingling coins or a sack full of money being carted in will cancel any guilt or punishment and will restore approval and favor. It is hardly surprising that such bitter accusations were handed down from society in the middle ages. People and situations are interchangeable, the state of affairs remains the same: ‘twas ever thus. The character who sings a recitativo lamentoso here could have lived at any time. She recognizes her fate in her role of sober lament. The choir feels with her.
